Stage 1

"We Need a Website" Is Usually the Wrong First Sentence

Naming the solution before the problem skips the one conversation that determines whether the solution is even the right one.

Most enquiries arrive already naming a solution: a website, an app, a CRM. That is a natural way to ask for help, but it quietly skips the question that should come first — what is actually going wrong, and is this the solution that fixes it?

Sometimes it is. Often, a closer look finds the named solution is a reasonable guess that treats a symptom rather than the cause. A business asking for "a website" may actually need a clearer answer to a specific question customers keep asking before they'll enquire — which a website can help with, but only once that question is known.

This is why a real first conversation asks about the business before the build: what is slow, what is unclear, what decision is this meant to support. Sometimes the answer confirms the original request. Sometimes it changes the brief entirely, and both outcomes are more useful than starting construction on a guess.
